Schools and community groups

If you are part of a school or community group which is located in Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland or the more urban areas of County Durham then the North East Community Forest (NECF) is your community forest.

We’re passionate about nurturing the environmental stewards of tomorrow. We love to work with schools and community groups to engage the next generation in tree planting. We are able to supply funding for trees, their maintenance and for the running of planting events. All we need from you is your permission, space to plant and some enthusiastic volunteers ready to dig in.

Planting trees and hedges within the grounds of your premises offers a wealth of benefits from promoting better health and wellbeing, to habitat creation and combating the climate crisis. By involving pupils and members of the community groups in the planting process we cultivate a legacy for years to come. Pupils for example could watch their trees grow as they move through their academic journey all whilst understanding the benefits our green spaces can provide.

What can we offer? The grants offered through Trees for Climate are tailored to each school or group's requirements (with landowner approval) and are available for a large variety of projects. Our expert team is here to provide you with free support and impartial advice to help plan, fund and plant tree planting projects. The minimum area for a project size is 0.1 hectares (1000m²)
Who will install/maintain? We have a team of contractors that will install the project on your behalf. Their cost is included as part of the grant. We also work with outdoor education charities who have helped install projects by including pupils in the installation.
How much will this cost? A Trees for Climate grant could cover all costs associated with woodland creation, for eligible projects, as well as providing ongoing funding to support the maintenance of the trees. Trees for Climate is one of the most flexible and competitive tree planting grants in England.
When can it be delivered? Our planting season runs from November to March each year.
